Golem is free and open source software released under the Apache License 2.0.
This means you can use Golem for any purpose, including developing and shipping commercial games, at no cost.
You are free to use, study, modify, and distribute Golem, including in commercial projects, as long as you comply with the terms of the Apache 2.0 license.
What this means in practice
You can
- Use Golem to make personal or commercial games
- Modify Golem to suit your needs
- Distribute games made with Golem without paying royalties
- Share or redistribute the engine source code under the Apache 2.0 license
- Fork the project and maintain your own version
You must
- Keep the original copyright and license notices
- Include a copy of the Apache 2.0 license when required
- State significant changes if you distribute a modified version
- Comply with the other terms of the Apache 2.0 license
Your game is yours
Games you create with Golem are your own. You are not required to open source your game just because you used Golem.
You may sell your game commercially, license it however you want, and keep your game code, assets, and content proprietary.
No royalties
Golem can be used to develop and ship games without paying royalties.
Third-party components
Some parts of Golem may include third-party software components with their own licenses and copyright notices. Those components remain under their respective licenses.
Trademarks
The Apache 2.0 license applies to the source code of Golem.
It does not grant rights to use the Golem name, logo, or branding except as allowed by applicable law or our separate trademark policy. If you distribute a modified or forked version of Golem, you may need to use your own branding.
